Jersey unveils new note series

The Treasury of States of Jersey has unveiled its new note series to be issued in April 2010. Printed by De La Rue with imprint, the notes can also be seen in this YouTube video. All feature a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the front. The 10-, 20-, and 50-pound notes are protected by a new hologram, and all denominations have windowed security threads, map of Jersey as a registration device, and watermark of a Jersey cow, electrotype denomination, and Cornerstones. For the first time Jèrriais, the island's native Norman French, appears on the note in addition to English and French.

Jersey to launch new notes in April 2010

According to a post on the States of Jersey web site dated 26 January 2010, “The Treasury Minister has announced the launch of Jersey’s first new set of bank notes for 21 years. Members of the public will be able to view the designs from Tuesday 23 February at the Jersey Museum, after an official launch the day before.

“Senator Philip Ozouf announced in his department’s 2009 business plan that new notes would be issued this year. He says “These new designs highlight many different aspects of the island’s diverse architecture, history and culture and represent a fresh, new look for a new decade.

““For the first time you can see the value of each note written in French as well as in Jèrriais. I hope this will contribute to the regeneration of Jersey’s local language and help those of us who grew up in a Jèrriais-speaking household to reacquaint ourselves with our traditional language.

“”I am confident that everyone can find a favourite image from the wide range of striking designs in this new family of notes.”

“All twelve parishes are featured in the new designs, and the back of each note carries the words États de Jersey as well as the parish crests. The notes include a new image of the Queen and a number of local landmarks.

“The new notes are now being printed and will be tested in banks’ cash machines in the coming months. They will start to appear in our pockets from April 2010.”

According to an article in the Jersey Evening Post dated 3 December 2009, the island nation will introduce a set of redesigned notes in 2010. The new notes will feature new security measures and will have the values printed in both French and Jèrriais on one side. Details about the other denominations have not been released, but the 1-pound note will feature the Liberation Statue, in Liberation Square, on the front and La Hougue Bie on the back. All but one of the new notes will be introduced in February 2010, with the new denomination of 100 pounds (US$165) issued later in the year.
