Costa Rica to issue new notes in 2010-2011

According to a Nacion.com article dated 23 June 2009, the Banco Central de Costa Rica
plans to issue a new series of notes beginning March 2010 and
commencing January 2011. The new series celebrates biodiversity and
will include 20,000- and 50,000-colon denominations (US$35 and $87,
respectively) for the first time ever, in addition to the existing
denominations (¢1,000, ¢2,000, ¢5,000, and ¢10,000).
Each note will also be a different color and feature a new personality on the front:
The 1,000-colon note will measure 125 x 67 mm, and each higher denomination will be 7 mm larger in length, culminating in the 50,000-colon note at 160 x 67 mm.
The 20,000-colone note is to be the first of the new series, scheduled for introduction in March 2010.
Each note will also be a different color and feature a new personality on the front:
- ¢1,000: Red, Braulio Carrillo Colina
▪ ¢2,000: Blue, Mauro Fernández Acuna
▪ ¢5,000: Yellow, Alfredo Gonzálex Flores
▪ ¢10,000: Green, José Figueres Ferrer
▪ ¢20,000: Orange, Maria I. Carvajal “Carmen Lyra”
▪ ¢50,000: Purple, Ricardo Jiménez Oremuno
