Colombia considers replacing 50,000-peso note to combat crime

According to an article in Colombia Reports dated April 16, 2009, the government of Colombia is considering changing its high-denomination banknotes in an attempt to flush out money earned by organized crime. In a recent senate debate, Senator Guillermo García suggested requiring the public to exchange old 50,000-peso notes (US$22) for newly-designed ones, a move which he hopes would unearth vast quanities of illegally gained money currently hidden by criminal groups.

At present, the 50,000-peso note (Pick 455) dated 2006 is Colombia’s largest denomination, although a 100,000-peso note is planned for introduction in mid-2009.
